My Conundrum

So I was talking to Ken, a long-time reader of Taxicab Depressions the other night, who asked me how the book is coming… and I said that I’m currently working on a piece entitled, “There Are No Hyenas In North America”.

That might strike you as a cryptic title, and you might be asking yourself, “Why would a taxi driver or a taxi passenger in Florida have any reason whatsover to utter those particular seven words?”

Exactly.

I want to post this story here, but I think I need to save it for the book. I have such limited time to write, and it will be hard to make real progress on the book and still post something here.

I will try… I have a vignette of a drunk British guy a week ago that I really liked.

I’m doing my best. I don’t want to lose the audience that I have, but if I am busy at work, that’s less time I have to write. On slow nights when there are few rides and I am not making any money, I get some work on the book done. I’ll try to throw you a bone as often as I can…

Yer not losing anyone, at least not this reader.

I check back, daily, ’cause i enjoy your style of writing. and the tales that you tell.

I understand that life sometimes interferes with what we would really like to do, so do not sweat it.

    Catch ya when we can,

    Bob

A buddy of mine had a page sized sign pinned to the wall at his workshop.
The sign showed an illustration of a target cross hairs and in large red letters
said ” POUND HEAD HERE “.
I imagine it would feel good once you stopped pounding but I have been unwilling to experience that myself, so far.
We wish you well in your journey through the valley of the absurd.

  3. Fallon says:

Patiently, happily waiting for the book.

  4. MissRed says:

Still here, still reading you. Your writing is too good and amusing to lose.

  5. Kevin says:

I stumbled upon your blog. Wow. Spent a good deal of time reading every one of your posts. Still wow.
You unpurposely landed an unpleasant job that gave you a lens on some sights most of us never even imagine. And then started writing about it. To document that . . . as an historian, Sir, I salute you!

As to the other major focus of your bloggings . . . Teaching American History (a while ago, before historians were neutered) I had good reason to read much of The Federalist Papers. Between that, and having had Mrs. Coots as my Civics teacher a long time before – who could instill respect in almost anyone, and planted Civics in me – I have to say that I fear (and maybe appreciate) that we are only a short step or vivid event away from armed rebellion, if we haven’t seen it outside the Bundy ranch (Note that the arms kept this particular event alive; absent them, it would have only been a mass arrest). It only took a few of these events two hundred and fifty yeas ago to lead to an armed revolution. Governments, like people, can be amazingly resistant to learning the lessons of history.

Now, back to the subject: A wonderful tease.

Your writings are enjoyable. I understand that an author is saving the good stuff for later, especially an aspiring first time wants-to-be-author.

You don’t need it, but you have my hearty approval to serve the best meat to the paying guests.

Just keep writing. You don’t know whom you’re helping.

Hack, don’t worry about we who read here, we’re not going anywhere. Looking forward to the book.

  7. Larry Rachman says:

While I’m not 100% sure whether I agree about the presence of hyenas, I still check in regularly for your next gem, and expect to do so pretty much indefinitely, even if your posts aren’t quite as regular as clockwork. Take the time you need to do it the way you think is right… not that you need me to tell you that. Looking forward to the tale about the pissed Brit.

  8. Kittyhawk says:

I echo all the previous comments, especially Kevin’s re: serving the best meat to the paying guests. Love your stuff and will take it any way you can give it!
Thanks, I’ve shared your blog with everyone in my family and all my good friends.
    Always, worth the wait!

  9. Ken says:

You only get one shot at your first book. I’m glad you are taking your best shot. I hope to encourage your effort.
